v19 v20 65 65 [[Image(defend3.png)]] 66 66 67 == Integrating Researcher Desktops==67 == !Desktop/Light Weight Federation == 68 68 69 O ften a researcher will want to directly interconnect their desktop or another computer into an experimental environment. This can enable an experimenter to debug effectively by importing their tools and environment easily, or to demonstrate the experiment to others by incorporating a display engine.69 One of the newest and most practical uses of DFA technology is to allow a researcher to connect an existing desktop workstation to a federated experiment. This lets a researcher bring their visualization and debugging tools into an experiment while keeping their home environment intact. In addition, researchers can provide limited external connectivity to other nodes in the experiment through the desktop. 70 70 71 This is a special case of combining specialized resources, but the lightweight system DETER uses to facilitate this is of particular interest. 71 The desktop federator is a powerful way to begin using federation without much configuration and overhead. Researchers have used desktop federation to demonstrate complex experiments at their local sites using powerful tools and hardware. Others have used the lightweight federation as a prototype to test the usefulness and feasibility of heavier weight, full featured federation in new experimental environments. 72 73 The simplest way to use desktop federation is to [FeddUsersGuide#ConnectingaDesktopNodetoaDETERExperiment make use of our pre-packaged virtual machine image]. More features can be made available if researchers [FeddDesktop install the desktop federator directly on a host]. Finally, users of the ExoGENI testbed can use our [DesktopExoGeni ExoGENI image] directly. 72 74 73 75 = The Software Architecture =
